School Stationary Supplies

On 8th March, 2016, SKOPE embarked on our first project after six months of fundraising and setting ourselves up as a charity. Along with some children from Sovann Komar Children's Village, myself (Ruth, SKOPE's coordinator) and some other staff members from Sovann Komar, traveled to Kampong Thom. This is a province about 2 hours north of Phnom Penh.

There we arrived at a school which I had visited three months earlier. Two primary schools had gathered together, over 900 students, eager to receive their school supplies. See, whilst we in the west might consider pens, pencils, and books basic staples to any student, in rural Cambodia many children struggle to find the supplies needed to go to school. Thanks to SKOPE, on this day, each and every child received books, a pen, and a pencil.

We also handed out footballs, basketballs, jump ropes, and other playground games so once the stationary had been distributed and stashed safely away, the students from Kampong Thom and the children from Sovann Komar began to play together.

This is what SKOPE is all about. We want Cambodians to help Cambodians and it's fantastic to watch our teenagers from Phnom Penh interacting so positively with the students who come from a completely different world. When a football is involved, however, background and money don't seem to matter.
